The Rotary Club of Toronto

Christie Refugee Welcome Centre has received a generous grant of $15,000 from The Rotary Club of Toronto towards our Stove & Ventilation Project.  The $60,500 project requires the purchase of a new stove and ventilation system.  Three hot meals and 2 snacks are served daily at our Christie Street shelter. A heartfelt thank you to The Rotary Club of Toronto for making a difference in the lives and well-being of our residents.

Donor Recognition

Christie Refugee Welcome Centre is extremely grateful for the foundations, organizations and churches that joined our donor team in FY'11.  The grants provided much needed resources to complete projects such as building new stairs, replacing aging boilers, refurbishing sleeping rooms and purchasing a new stove.  We say THANK YOU  to:

Take Action

On June 16, 2011, the government reintroduced the Preventing Human Smugglers from Abusing Canada's Immigration System Act as Bill C-4.  Despite the title, most of the provisions in the bill punish refugees, not smugglers.  The people who will suffer if this bill is passed are people fleeing persecution, including children.

Join CRWC and other refugee advocates in raising awareness and speaking out about the impact Bill C-4 could have on refugees in Canada.  To see how you can take action, go to Canadian Council for Refugees at www.ccrweb.ca.

The Home Depot Canada Foundation

A generous donation of $25,000 from The Home Depot Canada Foundation will allow CRWC to replace two aging boilers and make other energy efficient improvements to our Christie Street buildings. On October 13th, representatives from The Home Depot Canada Foundation as well as local Home Depot stores were on site to present the cheque to Linda Moorcroft, Executive Director.  Christie Refugee Welcome Centre was one of 16 successful recipients across Canada to receive this grant  through The Home Depot's Affordable Housing Grant Program.

Ride for Refuge

On October 1st, CRWC had an amazing team of volunteers from The Meeting House – Downtown Toronto riding in the Guelph Ride for Refuge.  The team set as their fundraising goal $5,000 towards the refurbishing of the sleeping rooms at the Centre.  Thanks to 90 donors who joined our team, $5,430 was raised.  Ride for Refuge is an annual fundraising event in support of refugees, orphans, homeless people, victims of human trafficking and related approved programs.
