Outreach Program

As families move from the shelter into their new homes, they are confronted with a host of challenges which can impede their settlement in Canada.

The goal of the Outreach Program is to increase the former residents' capacity for healthy and full integration in local communities.  Outreach workers collaborate with former residents for up to a year after they leave the shelter.  In order to address ongoing cultural, economic, vocational or emotional needs the residents can drop into the program, set up an appointment, or have telephone consultations with the staff.

By continued relationship building with the former residents, the Outreach staff are able to collaborate with other agencies, services, and programs to ensure the residents are connected with the most effective, appropriate, and supportative teams and resources.

Outreach Services include...

  • Home visits and assessments by Outreach staff
  • Support in developing immigration and settlement plans
  • Weekly drop-ins for connecting, addressing settlement issues and making referrals
  • Hosting special events and outings to build networks and friendships
  • Practical support of welcome kits, baby gifts, and donations

Helping Hundreds!

In 2008, the Outreach Program assisted 392 former shelter residents from 21 different countries.

Support is provided during the first year upon departure from Christie Refugee Welcome Centre.
